Poll of Public Perspectives on 988 & Crisis Response (2024)
A NAMI-Ipsos poll conducted in Summer 2024 found that awareness with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has been consistent, but familiarity remains low since the last time it was measured, but large numbers still don’t know where to turn to for help in a mental health crisis. The findings also show strong support for federal funding, state funding, and health insurance coverage of crisis services.
The 2024 NAMI Workplace Mental Health Poll (2024)
A NAMI-Ipsos poll conducted in January 2024, and focused on full-time workers employed at companies with at least 100 employees, found that most Americans believe it’s appropriate to talk about mental health at work but may not be prepared or feel comfortable to do so. Additionally, the poll found that American employees benefit from having access to mental health care coverage and need more help to understand and utilize what resources are available to them.
Poll of Public Perspectives on Mental Health Policy Priorities (2023)
A NAMI-Ipsos poll found that a bipartisan majority of Americans agree their elected officials need to do more to improve mental health care in the U.S. The findings show strong public interest in Congress taking decisive action to improve the nation’s ongoing mental health crisis.

A NAMI-Ipsos poll conducted in Summer 2023 found that most Americans are not familiar with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Additionally, the poll found that there’s strong bipartisan support for policy solutions and funding to expand the capacity of 988 call centers and the availability of related crisis services – even when people are not personally familiar with 988 or know anyone who has contacted the 988 Lifeline.

A poll conducted by Ipsos on behalf of NAMI found that voters are more likely to support candidates who prioritize mental health policies, like quality mental health care and removing barriers to care.

A poll conducted by Ipsos on behalf of NAMI finds that most teens are comfortable talking about mental health, but often don’t start the conversation. They also want schools to play a big role in their mental health, and they trust the information they get there, but feel like schools are not doing enough.

A poll conducted by Ipsos on behalf of NAMI found people were largely unaware of 988 ahead if its nationwide availability, but overwhelmingly favor policies to help build a robust mental health crisis response system that supports people who contact the new number.

This report represents NAMI’s analysis and recommendations of a survey conducted by Harris Interactive among the general adult public, people living with schizophrenia, and caregivers. NAMI commissioned the survey in order to raise a national dialogue. Twice as many people today live with schizophrenia than with HIV/AIDS, yet many Americans know little about the disease.
